Depends on what car you have. From a red light, you should hold the brake, put it in "1", rev it up to, say, 2000-3000rpm (again, it depends on what car you have), when the light goes green let go of the brake, let the engine go up to redline, then shift the lever into "2", and so on. This is not very good for your transmission though.
