Too hard to guess, need to start by getting the codes that the computer has stored when the check engine light sets. It is kept in there until you look at them and clear them out. that is the place to start, will give you clues as to what is wrong. You can buy a cheap tester (OBDI) type for 25-30 bucks or there is a way to get the codes by shorting out the proper connectors on your computer connector. If they have the old style tester an Advance auto store or Autozone might be able to check for free. Your car has what is known as an OBDI computer system, cars 96 on usually have OBDII, takes different tester.
