I'd follow what the owners manual says and see how your vehicle operates on that. If you are having issues with the 87 then go a step up to the next octane level. Too much money is wasted by people buying unnecessary higher octane levels in their fuel. Around here it's about a .25cent difference. Multiply that over time and you can see how much extra money you'll have in your pocket.
