Well anything pre 95 that hasnt been sitting on a yard for a long time is most likely going to have been thrashed by its previous Kiwi owner.
The new laws mean its no longer possible to import them as the dont meet the new crash regs.

Pay between 4-8,000 depending on condidtion. An 8k car would have to be totaly unmodified and either had one very carefull NZ owner, or been a lucky last import from a dealer.
4k would get you a well thrashed one with all sorts of hidden problems.
Thier only reall ok cars, and can be expensive to maintain. They also are a hot target for thieves.

But a look in the Autotrader will soon tell what the going rate is.
Expect to pay at least a $1,000 less than sticker price from a dealer, and prehaps $1,500-2,000 less if buying privatly.

Things to check?
well everything.
But a smoky engine should be avoided.
and one thats had the boost wound up should also be avoided.
and look for things like cut springs etc.
basicly anycar that looks like its been modfied in someones back yard.

Also I wouldn't buy one from anyone under the age of 25. You jsut know its been thrashed! and is only being sold becasue a diff or the Turbo are about to go.
