Anyway, thanks for the exercise  I'm sticking (no pun intended) to my suspicion of a Vacuum problem. Like Mike, I'm not sure where your steel cables end and Vacuum controls begin.
You don't hear any faint hissing from Vacuum being lost? Also, Way back when, there used to be a large coffee can under the hood used as a vacuum reservoir for these controls.... just an idea...
