i drive an e36 325i and i work on bmws for a living and from what i've seen if the car has been taken car of well enough there shouldn't be any MAJOR problems under 100k but after that bmw suggest a major service on those cars, which consists of plugs(maybe coils) water pump timing belt, tensions most likely CAT's and just a major check of EVERYTHING. my car has about 155k on it and its in decent condition, i still have yet to to the service but now that taxes are back i've found i have a lot to do, like a head gasket and bushings and mounts all over. so in my opinion its all how well the previous owner took care of the car and i would suggest telling your friend to read over the service history of the car before buying it. especially if the car has over 110k
