My band-aid solution for this problem on my 99 was to insert a small piece of foam at the end of the track. This keeps the roller (which is probably warn) from bouncing around and making the knocking sound.

The proper fix is probably to replace the roller mechanism, but I have too many other problems on my Windstar to do it.
