Welcome to AF.
For your system to work properly it needs the resivoir connected.
One other reason might be thiers air trapped in the cooling system. This needs purged or it'll overheat & or blow out the coolant.
On the low coolant light, if thiers an air bubble stuck to the sensor then it will trip the low level light.
