One thing I have noticed since I last typed this is that now when my windows are rolled down, sometimes when i come to a stop I smell a strong gasoline smell!
Although the noise may not be the fuel pump itself, it is DEFINATELY coming from the area where i think the fuel pump is...it is +/-1sq.ft. of the rear drivers side wheel....its just been difficult to locate the noise b/c i dont have a good jack/stands etc.going to buy a set today....
by the way, i have distinguished two distinct noises, one is an electronic noise and one is a sucking noise, but they are both coming from the same place. by the way, sometimes now the electronic noise, presumably the fuel pump, continues longer after i turn the car on and sometimes after i turn the car off! it sounds similar to the noise the power antennae makes when going going up or down....or something to that degree...ARG

your fuel pump should make an electronic noise. it should not make a hissing noise. if you have a 2 seater, your fuel pump is right behind you. that wall behind your front seats is where your fuel tank is and thus your fuel pump is also located there.
Z32's have a common problem with smelling gas...it usually is fuel lines that need tightened in the engine bay but in your case it could be coming from the fuel lines underneath or the fuel tank.
you simply need to locate where the noise is coming from. your fuel pump could be making the noise because the pick-up line is loose therefore causing the hissing noise.
also, the fuel tank could also have a puncture hole or something causing pressure to leak out. it is not as rare as you think.
basically just look up a write-up. (twinturbo.net) and find out how to get to it to check everything out. i may even be able to remove the fuel pump without dropping the whole tank.
