I have a friend with an '01 or '02 that I have looked at. It has a different DPFE as well. It is clearly visible on the front of the engine and sits atop the two tubes/hoses coming off of the EGR "supply" line. As I recall, it is about 11/2"X2" rectangular with an electrical connection. Is very flat in shape and as you say looks nothing like the "regular" DPFE's. I would try to get the Ford part number off of it and then run it on y2kford.com to check a price.
