I have a 2001 malibu and have the same problem, with mine i know its the theft system. If the 98 has the theft system thats most likely your problem. When the car doesnt want to fire you turn the key off then back to the on position and leave it for about 8 minutes, when the "theft system" light stops flashing, then turn your key back off, then crank it over it should fire then if thats the problem. When it doesnt fire, is there a theft system light flashing on your dash panel??
