In all honesty, I'd go to a junkyard (or call one locally!) 1
st, and buy one second-hand. These are not a 'problem-item' with the Jeep Cherokee, or any other model Jeep for that matter.
I'd chance, from your description, taking the offended device apart. Cleaning it thoroughly, and reasembling it, before disavowing it's reliabilty any further. Jeeps are superstitious enough as is!
