The name Paul means 'little'. To word little means a small amount, quantity, or degree, according to the dictionary. Scripturally speaking to be little would simply mean having no strength of your own and thereby having to be dependant upon God, for everything. Paul, when he understands just how small and helpless he is in his spirit man can then turn to his Maker who will make him a giant of a man through the power of God's Holy Spirit.
Everyone at one time or another feels inadequate for the task set before them. Paul does too. However Paul has learned to turn to God to help him and be his strength. By doing so he is able to do many things that causes him to shake his head in amazement for he knows that in himself he simply is not able. He understands the weaknesses of his fellow man and therefore is an apt listener and counselor for those who come to him. And others do come to him. They come because they see the things in life he has overcome, the things he has accomplished and the goals he sets and achieves.
Paul's greatest gift is knowing just how small, weak and vulnerable he is without God. He is not pretentious or puffed up in himself. When Paul feels he is small, that is when he is standing tall in God's eyes.
John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
