Ive been looking for the same problems ive been having on here but nothing on the head. My 4x4 worked fine in the fall on radom offroad trips, now that its cold and snowy when i need 4x4 the most (open rears SUCK in snow) its fails me. What ill do its hit the 4HI and the light will go on ill hear the tcase clikc and nothing. no 4x4, same thing for 4LO. So i check all the vac lines the selinoids the fuses the fluid levels, all good. Once in a while i will pop in to 4HI and work fine till i put a load on it (going up a hill or Turning) then it will pop and and grind. I took it to a shop to get it looked at and my luck it worked fine for them, No problems i get it back i was able to take it in and out of 4HI no problems. Then tonight when i was having a little fun in an empty parking lot and got to close to a snow bank. With confidence i hit 4HI and nothing just the right rear wheel spining like a top ( I REALLLLLLY want a LSD) the 4HI light was lite and since i wasnt in. i hit it to 2HI and was able to get pushed off. After driving about 100 yeards the front right wheel area was grinding sooo bad. As if im trying to put a manual car in to gear w/o a clutch. I hit the 4HI button and it went away. I dont have a jack to safetly lift the whole front of the vehicle like im seeing some people test. Im gonna drop it off again but i can till tuesday. I wanted to know if its somthing any one has herd of before?
If the front axle is making a clicking noise it is not locking good.
The front axle is locked in with by a vacuum actuator and cable.
First thing to check is for good vacuum to it in while in 4W threw a vacuum switch on transfer case.
If good vacuum to it check the actuator and solenoid and shift lock cable.

Also look in how to forum and check the other post on here.
