Well it could be a stuck or sticky lifter. A common problem apprently on the SR20. Theres not really much you can do about it though, but forunatly its not considered deadly for your engine.

However, it could also be a bad Oil pump.
This is quite serious, as its possibly not building up enough pressure on start up to fully lubricate the engine.


However its quite possible its something else entirly, can you describe then sound with a little more detail?
Prehaps stick your head under the hood and get someone to start the car so you can hear exactly where its comeing from.

It might be something as simple as a slipping belt.
