You don't need a code reader for your year vehicle. A Haynes manual will show you where to place a short jumper wire ... then you just turn the ignition key on and count the flashes of your Check Engine Light. I forget the name of your code level ... but I believe that the codes are two digit ... and all codes are flashed twice for easy checking.
