Okay, I did some pokin' around. The pictures are taken with parts out of car so I could get good light.
This is my procedure for changing the light illuminating the gear selector on my 2001 Chevy Malibu.
Tools: screwdriver, flat head.
Note: Pay close attention to detail. You'll want to be able to get this back together when you're done.
1. Remove shifter knob - a horseshoe [shaped like a staple] clip located on the front of the knob holds it on. Pry clip out from top. [cup with other hand or it will pop out and you'll lose it]
2. Remove console top cover [gear shifter surround] - pry up rear, slide back and lift out
3. Remove gear selection indicator [refer to image] - Four clips hold it on [outlined with red in image] the rear right was most difficult for me. I suggest releasing the two front clips first, then rear left, then rear right. Be gentle, don't force the plastic clips or they will snap off.
Now you can see the light!
4. Remove piece shown in next image - this piece has two clip on the front [outlinged in red] and one in the back. With the front clips released, stick your smallest finger in the back of the shifter slot and push back on the bottom of the back clip.
Change the bulb and put it back together. It's a 194.
This took me probably 20 mins.
