I would use grey primer under black,it will work fine and the black will cover it quite easily.I only use white primer on lighter colours,reds,yellows,white,pale blues etc.Anything darker I stick with the grey primer.From a personal view I would use a gloss black and polish this up to a shine.Although it's perfectly acceptable to use a flat black and clearcoat it,for your first paintjob,I would use the gloss black and remove the clearcoating stage altogether which I feel would make the painting process easier.
