when you prime it, the pressure goes up nice... when you start it, manifold vaccume opens the regulator allowing fuel to return... the stalling and popping in the manifold could be a regulator problem, since the diaphram in the regulator might be punctured, allowing for to much fuel to leave the rail and some to enter the intake manifold creating backfire. Take the hose off of the regulator and inspect it.
