Yeah - what he said...the sender unit for the gauge is most likely in the front of the tank.
I heard from a Volvo mechanic that Volvo customers came into the dealer complaining that the water temp gauge on their vehicles fluctuated and they were afraid their car was running too hot when sitting....they had so many complaints of 'overheating' (even tho the gauges were working perfectly, and the car was simply running 10-15 degs hotter then when moving) that they re-engineered the gauges sensitivity to only move if the temp change became extreme from the norm, which meant by then, the car prolly was overheating - my point is be happy your gauges work that accurately
