I kind of had a hunch that this would be the case -- not a limited slip like I know with the discs and beveled spider gear assemblies, etc. I had one of these go bad on a jeep I owned. The safety wires for the carrier assembly were never installed and it spun itself loose off of the ring gear and then the pieces managed to get themselves lodged in the axle and spider gears and ruined the rear end, except I was able to salvage the ring and pinion.

The only problem was, when this occurred, I was a million miles from home on one of the rougher trials in Northern Utah. It was not a good time rebuilding that thing out in the wilderness to get it home, but I did it. Since the front end was also limited slip, I pulled it down enough to inspect it before I went "jeeping" again.
