it also comes down to, as you said, how expensive the alternative is.
say you bought a new van. that would set you back $20,000+ easily.
a used van could cost a lot less, but have the same problems.
if you can get an engine with a 3 year warranty (most new cars come with 4-6 year powertrain. cheap cars usually have 10) then i'd go for it.
for 4000 plus instalation, you can almost have yourself a new "used" van.
