It won't hurt the trans at all. But eventually, it'll reach the point where the car will no longer move. It doesnt do the motor any good if its bouncing off the redline when you try to accelerate quickly.
As far as cost, shop around. The differences between shops can be a hundred bucks or more.

But, make sure you get a written estimate.

It's best to ask around (friends, family, etc) and see if anyone knows of a shop they trust. Many people have mechanics that have done work for them for years. Hope this helps you.
