good thought - but didn't solve the prob. Yes, the 2nd gen has the dash dim light knob to the right of the wheel - but it wasn't the issue - and I had my hopes up 
I checked, all lights on the dash are running normally - except the stereo display - the prob is isolated to the radio display. Might this suggest a non-electrical issue - that's it's the radio unit.
