can't say what the check engine light is about, but I had a problem with my ETS, It would not turn on or off. It turned out to be the actual wireing in the stickshift. The wires have a cheap plastic shield that after so many years of usage it rubbed against metal and other things. It nicked the wires inside. Take a look at that before you do anything else.
