one of my friends has a turbocharged 2.2L OHV cavalier running on 11psi boost, and is achieving at around 365FWHP, and the only suspension upgrades he has done are the usual strut bar/tower replacements, new calipers, rotors, brake pads, and a nice set of 17" racing tires from Motegi Racing (MR7's?).
With this he doesnt really burn out, unless he rev's into the mid to hi RPM range, and punches into first. Even then, it isnt a terrible burn out. Just remember NOT to use street tires, you'll shred them out before the day's over.
And thank god you don't have a RWD car, then you'll be talkin' about serious suspension tuning. When I had my 300ZX TT, I was stupid enough to get all this nice engine work done on the VG30DETT, and then I managed to push out around 450RWHP on the dyno. My dad drove the bitch home and the next morning I drove it to the school. Landed in a small pit ditch trying to do a quick 0-100 run on OPEN country road, where traction is awesome, and there's no traffic around. I turned a corner and gunned it still going about 35, and tried to drift my way out of it. Let's just say that if you have HICAS technology in your Z, and youve tuned the bitch high enough where it just tries to take over when your approaching a sharp turn such as it is, it will be HELL. It basically overcorrected me WAY too far, and in the attempt to OVERCORRECT the HICAS system, I peeled out and landed rear into the ditch.
I would say stick with the FWD if you want ultimate traction, thats what FWD is mostly known for. AWD on the avenger would be a huge bitch, not to mention if you've got the money for it. And if you do, I would sell the Avenger and get a much better potentially-based car, like a WRX STi, some car that's meant to be tuned fast, and already has AWD.
If you want power, go RWD. And note that they aren't made to drift, unless your a pro, and I will admit, I am NO pro at drifting or even racing for that matter. So if you love overtaking someone on a corner, and your driving like an '89 camaro with a chevy 305/350, be prepared to die.
Don't get me wrong, the Avenger is a decent car, but I really believe that it just isn't made to be made fast. Just like cavaliers, civics (except type-R's), accords, Sentra SE-R's, Saabs, etc.
If you havent done this already, and are still interested in deep-tuning your Avenger, please do the 3.0L swap. With a huge turbo kit on the 2.5L, you'll kill the engine in no time, if you dont empty your wallet before this. The 6G72 will allow you to ask questions in the 3000GT/Stealth forum, which the guys there would really know how to tune a forced-induction engine of the 6G7x line, since there isnt a large crowd of turbo'd 6G73's.
The LAST thing I will say to you concerning a solution to the AWD conversion is looking into the 420A motor by Mitsubishi. Yes, the same line made in Eclipses and the I4 Avengers. I believe they mostly run on AWD, and I've seen a person on CarDomain do a successful AWD conversion on his V6 Avenger body, but he swapped his V6 for the I4. Find a donor car of the I4 chassis, and you'll be off to a great start!
Good luck!
Let me know if youre getting into the 420A conversion, I'll do my best to keep you informed on the next few steps.
