Indeed my first thought was wheel bearing...this is a continuous rumbling that accentuates when you turn on one side and lessens when turning the other side. It is also independent of the torque applied to traction..does it as well when coasting. WHeel bearing is quite easy to replace.

THe other not so wanted option is "torque converter clutch" slippage..known as TCC shudder...which shows when torque is applied, disappears when releasing throttle. This can be tested by disconnecting the TCC solenoid at the plug going to the transmission. THis prevents TCC from applying..if noise disappears, you have your response.
Another option is constant velocity joints going haywire....
