Howling Noise
Periodically, I hear a low howling noise coming out of my 99 Ford Ranger engine compartment. It is most noticeable when idling. The noise comes on and goes away unexplainably. The noise seemed to originate in and around the airtake box and the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF). When I placed my hand on these components, I also felt slight vibration. There is not much in the airbox but could it be coming from the MAF? otherwise the vehicle seemed to run OK.
