Sounds like your timing belt tensioner may be due for replacement, typically knock at around 2,500 rpm's. When they start to go, they sound similar to a rod knocking - many believe the engine is about to fail.

If it's original, or even the 2nd timing belt & tensioner, may be due for replacement.

Just went through this myself on the same engine, only it's a '97 with 163k miles, mine too had started with weird metallic clicking sounds between 2-3k rpm's. It was my waterpump failing, causing my timing belt tensioner to weaken and putting slack in the timing belt itself.
