Well I don't know about your Dad but I went through this awhile back but it did not take me long to find. It was the wires to my kicker in the back had got grounded against each other when I loaded a fender in there and had to push a few things around and let the seats down. Killed one battery,found the problem then had to replace the alternator. Does the pos cable spark a lot when you hook it up. I know all lights are suppose to go out after 20 mins but one guy I knew with a Chevy PU '98 the light under the hood was not going off and it was killing his battery only if he was not driving it like over the week end.
