The water pump is an internal pump. It is driven by the timing chain, which also drives the duel overhead cams. (I just replaced mine, which, I will NEVER do again...too much work) I was lucky though, when the pump went out, it did not cause any other damage. Usually, when the pump goes out, it causes the cams to jump time, which inturn causes the valves to jam themselves into the pistons, which pretty much destroys the engine.
