The noise you describe is known as TOD: tick of death. It is generally can be taken care of by the seafoam treatment. If you do not know how to do it let me know and I give you the detailed instructions. I just recently did it and it helped me a lot.
Another source of ticking is so called Mickey Mouse oil pump seal. It may be changed during the timing belt replacement. That brings me to a question about your timing belt. With that many miles on the car when was the last t-belt replaced? EA82 require 60,000 miles t-belts replacement.
