Issues with ignition timing

I have a 91 Civic DX with a D15, last week it melted a rotor and went out of time. So I changed the rotor and it ran fine for about 3 miles and it fried another one. So I went a little further and put a different distributor in it. This worked to get it running, and it no longer fries rotors, but it runs like crap. I timed the new distributor, but it's advanced as far as it will go and still misses and backfires. I was wondering if anyone knew what the problem could be. I checked the cam timing and that is correct. Im not very familiar with Hondas and I'm to the end of my knowledge as to what could be causing this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
