92 overheating diagnostic steps

hi. i would like to know the best way to go about finding the probelm as to why my car overheats. yesterday i noticed smoke comeing from the hood and my temp light came on (dummy light, no guage) so i pulled over and poped the hoos to find lots of smoke. i let it cool down and drove it to my nearest friends house. when i got there the light was on and it started smokeing again. the next morning i started it and noticed the low coolent light was on. so i bought 3 litres of coolent and poured them into the rad, let the car run and again the temp light came on. ive left it there since.

i checked the oil, its fine. there seems to be no coolent leaks when the car is off though i havent checked for leaks while running.

also even when the car was madly overheating the cooling fans did not come on. neither of them.

i 3was wondering what the problem might be and how i would go checking each component of the cooling system. thanks everyone.
