The cap has bussing molded into the top to direct the spark to a terminal on the side of the engine adjacent to the spark plug, rather than having wires cross over at the cap.
If you think that's a high price, check the cap/rotor for an OptiSpark distributor (about $140) or COP systems ($65 each for eight units).
