Well, having been around my fair share of so-called criminals and deviants, i can tell you that the young men in these centers respect people that respect them. COs (Correctional Officer) that try to establish authority by threats and yelling receive immediate resistance from the population. Of course it is necessary to maintain your place in the system as an authority figure, but the means by which you establish this place can dictate how the population reacts.

Being too friendly will get you walked all over and is probably worse than the dictator approach, but dictators can only be successful for so long before those being dictated to make their opinions known in one way or another. And by creating tension and anger amongst a group of men who can't (or at least know they shouldn't) take it out on you results in them taking it out on someone else. That cycle doesn't stop.

That just about sums it up! This has also been my personal experience so far. There are always gonna be at least 2 or 3 "extreme" cases that you'll encounter but you know there's nothing anyone can do until they get a true wake-up call.
