I do struts (front & rear) in my garage at home so it can be a DIY job. But you need to know what you are doing and special tools are required like the strut coil spring compressor. However, safety is important.
Where strut work may be expensive is when you find worn out parts like upper strut mount/load bearings or rubber bushings in addition to the cost of each strut. Shops that replace struts charge around $35 - $40 per wheel depending on where you live.
