I figured I would post a reply with what the root cause to this problem was.
It was the center shift lever. The button you push in to move from gear to gear was not popping out far enough when you returned it to the park position. Then the cable that goes from the center consule to the ingnition switch was not traveling far enough to allow the ingnition cyclinder to rotate all the way back to the off position.
The best news on this is my daughter had her "friends that work on cars" look at it (for like 3 or 4 hours) and they darn near tore the whole steering column apart. She comes home and I spend 20 minutes in the car, pull out a button and now I'm back to being really smart and can fix anything.
