Haynes manual says red brake light on is either parking brake not released or low fluid level in master cyllinder. Air in brake lines might be causing fluid level to fluctuate in master cylinder reservoir and triggering the sensor.

We had both rear brake cylinders replaced under warranty. I passed on getting new shoes, they just left the old ones in after cleaning brake the fluid off and it now works fine.
