you dont have to tell me about thermal paste. However ive seen older CPU's have a little dot...not even covering the entire contact patch. entire contact patch > little dot.
as far as watercooling, its a last resort thing IMHO. Like you said, a good copper/aluminum sink with good airflow should be adiquite.
