Ya, I followed those steps to the letter. The chiming starts after step 6, and before i open any doors in step 7. I waited until the chimes stopped to perform step 7, and i get dings when i open the door and when i close it. I did get the feeling like it was trying to convey some sort of trouble code to me. I will bring it to the dealership sometime next week and post the results, just in case you run across someone with the same problem.
