Well, it's not an electronic sensor in the door, just a switch. You can do a search in the forum for "door switch" and find more info than you probably want from that search.

The windows, locks, etc. failing to work, I would expect that to be unrelated to the door ajar indication. When you say the lights wouldn't work, was that just the interior lights that come on when the doors are opened, or does that include headlights, etc. as well?

If it were just windows and locks, I'd suspect the problem to be in the connector junction in the door jamb near the hinges. However, I wouldn't expect the lights and sunroof to be effected by that junction. Instead, you might have an issue with a loose fuse, loose connector at the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) or intermittant GEM. Inspect the fuses in the engine compartment and interior to make sure the all look properly seated.
