Try insuring a car that didn't come out in Australia and isn't listed as a car that can be complianced even though it's a private import
Unfortunately, when you sign an insurance contract, you are letting them do whatever they want including cancelling the contract itself on any premise - it's all in the wording: they win and you lose
I've gone back to 3rd party property and damage by uninsured drivers for that very reason. As a 4G the insurance will only go to 4 grand, as an import it's premium is worth a 1/3rd of the price I paid for it per year and as a "modified" Civic it can't be insured without an engineers cert for the mods (go try explaining to them that this is how it left the factory) and the premium is nuts not to mention the variety of extra clauses that 6 companies tried to throw in.
This is all despite the fact that I am in the over 30 bracket, have had one accident that was my fault 17 years ago or so, 2 accidents that wern't my fault over 10 years ago and had a 30% no-claim bonus with NRMA.

To say I hate insurance companies is an understatement.
