I have a 97 and have done a lot of work on it although mine has less miles (131k).

There in no overdrive lockout switch...4th gear is overdrive and 3rd gear is one to one (gear ratio). The gear shifter controls this. Try shifting the gear shift.

Also check the throttle position sensor which controls kickdown (that is like a downshift when the accelerator pedal is floored). Or just see if it kicks down.

Did you or have you overhauled the so called NSS which actually is a trAnsmission range sensor which indicates which gear it is in (PRNDL or prindle switch as they call it at the stealer)?

Oh, does the transmission feel like it is slipping?
