Umm, the fuel crisis of 1973/74 or so was far, far, far worse than it seems today.
There was no 1974 24 Hours of Dayonta or Twelve Hours of Sebring due to the fuel crisis.
"Although the Sebring 12 Hours dropped from the World Sportscar Championship in 1972 when the FIA withdrew its sanction for the event, IMSA stepped in and the Sebring 12 Hours remained an important event in the calendar despite the cancellation of the 1974 race because of the fuel crisis."

Performance cars have FAR more performance and gas mileage than pony cars, muscle cars, and sports cars of the 1970s. Ford is developing an all-new 3.5 liter DOHC V-6. The new crossover SUV, the Ford Edge, will get it this fall.
