Im about ready to pull both engine and trans, but I really didnt feel like screwing around with the CV shafts and everything that comes with it. How are you planning on supporting the trannie when the engine isn't connected to it? Like the other two guys said. Wiggle, lift, and see if you can get it apart.
Halfshafts really aren't that hard to deal with. When I pulled my trannie, I poped both ball joints (r/l), removed both calipers(to gain additional movement for the strut when I pulled the axel out of the trannie, keeping it in the bearing) and pulled the spline out of the trannie using a prybar. Then I tied them out of the way. (I'm not saying that you need to pull the halfshafts, just giving an overview).
