A centrifugal supercharger is a fairly good matchup to most American front engine rear drive cars. Since these cars have built-in traction issues on the street, and large engine displacements, they don't need the mid-range power that a turbo can give. Particularly if the dragstrip is your only racing venue. Since I don't associate with the Mustang crowd, (I consider them cannon fodder, the car, not the people), I can't tell you what works. IMO, the Mustang is a good choice to modify as it is well supported by the aftermarket.
