Some auto trannys have a vacum modulator valve. If the vac line for it were reconnected to the wrong vac port you might have your problem.
Sounds like you are adjusting the throttle (aka kickdown) cable.
Any chance your tranny has a power/economy (or similarily labeled) switch on the dash board somewhere and the position has been changed ?
That does change the shift points.
