I'm thinking this pattern you have pointed out here is basically just a bi-product of human nature. I will agree with you, that this is a phenomena that I too have encountered. I'm thinking that this may be a facet of concerning ourselves over the things which we care about the outcomes of, but have no control over. A mistake we happen to make is something we can dismiss as being a isolated act of foolishness - when someone we care about does something along the same lines, we are not reassured with the same "I'm not going to do that again" knowledge. The fact that they did something so dumb is cause for anxiety. That's my theory.
