You can take a 32 once ball-pin hammer and a twelve point socket, just smaller than the lock nut. hammer the socket over the locknut and use a breaker bar to break them off. Some people use a air hammer on them, but that is a little to much. Drive the socket on about a quarter inch. You may need a couple of them. I work at a shop and we get this all the time. I have successfully remove many this way, and no damage to the studs. However, you will have to get new lock nuts.
